The Government That They Deserve
By Matt McDonald

"People get the government that they deserve." That is the phrase that has been floating in my head the last couple of weeks. I have heard that phrase many times working the in arena of politics, and I have heard it once or twice in conversation around the dinner table, but is it true?

This is the question that I have challenged myself with while composing this article. Do people really deserve the government that they get? My mind first races to the people of days gone by. The peoples of Germany, Poland, France and Western Europe who had to live under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, or the Russian people who had to live behind the iron curtain of the Soviet Union. Certainly no one deserved the death camp of Nazi Germany or the slave labor camps of Siberia. Next my mind races to those living in the oppressed Nations of today like North Korea, or Iran. Surely the people of North Korea do not deserve to starve to death or the people of Iran forced to live under strict Islamic law.

As thoughts of people living in oppressed nations pass through my head, I cannot help but think about the citizens of our fair State of Maine. Now certainly I am not comparing our State to Nazi Germany or Communist Russia, but one cannot argue the fact that the citizens of our state are certainly oppressed. We may not have death camps or slave labor camps but nonetheless the people of Maine are being forced to carry the weight of a burden that they do not deserve to carry. The iron fisted state government of the State of Maine is forcing the people of Maine to bear the largest tax burden in the entire Union.

If you are like me and are tired of the exodus of young people from the State of Maine because they can't afford to live here, and you are tired of hearing about people being forced to sell their homes because they can no longer afford the property tax, then this November, we, as the citizens of Maine, have an opportunity to bring change to this state, because the hardworking and good people of this state do not deserve the terrible government that we currently have.

As the voting season draws ever so close, do not just vote for those who support serious tax reform and serious change to the state government, go and tell your friends and family to support these candidates as well because we know that if change for good is to come to the State of Maine it is going to come from the citizens of the state and not from the state government.
